Getting started

What is Jarful?

Jarful is a budgeting app for New Zealand households. It brings in your transactions, sorts them by Spend type › Category › Merchant, and shows how much is left in each part of your budget this week and this month. It also forecasts your cash flow a year ahead, matches receipts to payments, and keeps track of bills, subscriptions, your mortgage and other loans, savings goals, belongings and insurance.

Can I sign up now?

Yes. Start a free 14-day trial — no card required.

Who is it for?

Households who want a clear weekly picture: couples, families and flatmates sharing costs, and anyone who has outgrown a spreadsheet but still likes the control of one.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Jarful runs in your web browser on phone, tablet or computer. On a phone you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app.

Does it work offline?

Partly. If you lose signal, Jarful opens with the figures you last saw on that device and refreshes when you’re back online. Making changes needs a connection.

Can more than one person use the same budget?

Yes. You can invite a partner or another household member so you’re both looking at the same numbers, each with your own sign-in.

Bank feeds & data

Can I connect my bank?

You can import CSV exports from any NZ bank today. Live, read-only bank feeds through Akahu are being switched on for all households shortly. When a feed is on, Jarful only asks for read-only access — it can see transactions and balances, but it can’t move money or make payments. You never give us your internet-banking password. See Security & privacy for more.

Which banks are supported?

You can import a CSV from any NZ bank today. Once live feeds are switched on, they come through Akahu, which connects to ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, Westpac, TSB, The Co-operative Bank, Heartland, NZHL, SBS and Rabobank; KiwiSaver and investment providers Booster, Fisher Funds, Generate, Milford Asset Management, Simplicity, Superlife, Pie Funds KiwiSaver, Sharesies, Hatch, Kernel Wealth, Stake and Sharesight; plus American Express, Latitude (Gem Visa) and Wise. Banks and cards bring in transactions; KiwiSaver and investment providers show balances and holdings for your net worth, not transactions. See the full list.

Does Jarful use AI?

Some features do, and only when you use them: reading a receipt you snap, an insurance policy you upload, or photos of your belongings and their labels — and Ask Jarful, which is off until you switch it on. For those, the image, document or question (plus only the figures needed to answer it) is sent to Anthropic, the company behind Claude, to be read. Ask Jarful never sees account numbers. You check a policy’s details before they’re saved, and a matched receipt can be undone.

How often do transactions update?

When you import a CSV, transactions update as soon as you upload a statement. Once a live feed is on, banks usually make new transactions available to Akahu about once a day, so the feed can be up to a day behind — and you can refresh on demand.

Do I have to connect my bank?

No. Import a CSV from your bank today. Duplicates are skipped if you import the same period twice.

Can I disconnect or delete my data?

Yes. You can ask us to delete your account and data at any time. Once a bank feed is on, you can revoke Jarful’s access from your Akahu account. See the privacy policy.

Budgeting

Weekly or monthly — which does it use?

Both. Set each category weekly or monthly, whichever matches how you’re paid and how the bill arrives, and Jarful converts between them (52 weeks ÷ 12 months). You can view your budget week by week or month by month.

What’s the spreadsheet view?

It’s your whole budget as an editable grid: categories down the side, budget, actual spend and what’s left across the top, plus previous months. Click a cell and type, use arrow keys and Tab to move, or paste a column straight from Excel or Google Sheets.

What about one-off purchases?

Mark a big, unusual purchase — a new fridge, a car repair — as a one-off. It’s still tracked, but it won’t blow out your everyday budget or skew your averages.

Is Jarful financial advice?

No. Jarful is a tool for seeing and planning your own money. Projections and scenarios are estimates based on the numbers you enter. For advice about your situation, talk to a licensed financial adviser.
